Things to be happy about today: Photo Booth Edition

I have abused utilized the Photo Booth application on my Macbook to highlight some of the reasons I have to be happy today!

I love this color combination of mustard yellow and purple.

I think my makeup looks relatively okay today! A bit dramatic, but drama always makes life more interesting.

I bought these earrings off Etsy last Friday, and they had already arrived by Monday! I think they are absolutely beautiful and with all of the purple I tend to wear, I figure I'll get a lot of use out of them.

I am eating an avocado for lunch, and it is perfectly ripe.

My roommate is back on American soil. She's not allowed to travel anywhere for an extended period of time ever again. I missed her too much.
Okay. So I kind of cheated here. This picture is from my camera, not Photo Booth.
So what's making you feel good today? :)

In a funk.

Ever since I received my rejection email on Friday, I've had a really difficult time shaking off my sad mood.

Honestly? This is the thought that is constantly going through my mind: You're not good enough.

And the thing is, I know that is a terrible way to think and feel, but I just can't seem to force myself to be happy and optimistic.

This morning, my yoga instructor announced that she would offer the midterm immediately after class to anyone who was interested in taking it early.

I figured I would probably do best taking it following a class since the poses would be fresh in my mind so I stayed after to take the test. Part of the midterm featured my instructor giving two random poses. She gave me my first, and I completely blanked. I just couldn't focus or remember the pose for the life of me.

I still got an A on the midterm (though not a perfect score obviously), and I left the room thinking I might cry. It was truly not even a big deal, but I just couldn't stop thinking, "Why can't you do anything right anymore? What's wrong with you?"

I promise this will (hopefully) be my last depressing post.

Meh.

Not a great start to the weekend

This morning, I woke up from a nightmare in which I did not get into my first choice graduate school.

Glad that wasn't real, I thought as I opened my Macbook and checked my Gmail.

Ah yes, there was my rejection email from my dream school.

I always knew I was psychic!

Seriously though. I burst into irrational sobs and contemplated my now bleak future.

Fortunately, I had stayed at my parents' house the night before so I had Ellie to console me. She lovingly set her head on my lap, and I knew she was thinking, I still adore you, Jenna! I think you're awesome!

Anyway. As I sent distraught and emotionally unstable text messages to my closest friends, I worked my way through a bag of Dove chocolates, unwrapping each piece and laughing mockingly at the little notes.

"Climb high, climb far...your goal the sky, your aim, the stars."

HAHAHA. Yeah, right, Dove!!!!!

Finally though, after a long bubble bath and lots of sweet phone calls and messages from friends, I got a reality check and put it all in perspective.

My dream school was a really long shot, and I'm glad I applied.

This also has made me reconsider if graduate school is right for me and my goals. Am I sure I want to do postgraduate work? Is spending tens of thousands of dollars right if I'm not even positive what I want to do? Was I really just in love with the actual school rather than the actual schoolwork?

Deep, deep thoughts.

I am feeling much better now, though I am still seeing a few gin and tonics in my immediate future.

I mean, I have to! Dove told me, "Be good to yourself today."

Amateur Mistake

This morning, I woke up feeling well-rested and refreshed.

Wow! I thought. I even woke up before my alarm clock! I am such an energetic and morning-loving girl!
This was me.
Then, I took a look at the clock. It was 8:37AM.

Zut alors!

I had not woken up before my alarm.

Quite the contrary!

It turns out I had set my alarm for PM instead of AM.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Lucky for me, the only class I missed was yoga, and my instructor allowed me to attend her 10AM class instead. Tonight though, I will certainly be checking my alarm before going to sleep.

Such an amateur mistake!

I love my dad.

Remember how I am minus one door handle because of the freezing rain?

Well, this morning I received this email from my dad.

"Dear Ms. Beall – your car is scheduled to be serviced this Friday to have your door handle repaired – therefore you need to stay at the Ellie’s Bed & Breakfast the night of Thursday, January 26. We have you booked into a non-smoking room, double bed with one golden doodle on the second floor with a panoramic view of the backyard."
My wonderful roommate for Thursday night, Ellie May.
Hahaha!

This was exactly the kind of laugh I needed before my QA exam. Wish me luck!!

Monday Happenings

Happy Monday, bloggers! Here are just a few things going on in my life today.

1. I lost my Student ID on the way to yoga class this morning. After retracing my steps, my lost ID is still missing in action. While I'm a bit bummed I have to pay the $15 replacement fee, I am mostly happy that I get a new photo. Vanity.

2. I'm not wearing my hair in a braid! This is a bit monumental in that I wear a braid in my hair practically every single day. It's just an easy way to style my hair while looking like I put at least some effort into my appearance. Optical allusion. Today I am wearing a clip, which is actually lazier than the braid. I'm applauding my variety here. Not my effort.

3. My friend's sister is finding out the gender of her bebe today, and we are all getting lunch afterwards. Ahhhhhh!!!!!!

4. Target has been out of long leggings for the past two weeks. Fix this, Target.

5. In more positive Target news, I've been stocking up on my Crystal Light since it's been on sale for $2.04! They're practically giving it away!
I especially stocked up on the energy variety!
6. We had freezing rain on Friday night/Saturday morning, and while my dad was being amazing and filling up my gas tank for me, he also broke off my door handle. Oops. This means I have to currently enter through the passenger side door and climb to the driver's seat. Classy.

7. I have my first QA exam tomorrow. Prayers are encouraged.
Jesus, I hope my low mass attendance this month won't discourage your divine intervention in my QA grade.
8. My roommate returns from her month abroad on SUNDAY, and my other roommate will be back a week from Thursday (She's spending a few extra days in Ireland- quite the life!). I've missed them so much!

9. I've already ruined my diet for the day, and it is only 11:36AM. Stupid Hershey Raspberry Hugs.
Oh, how I love and hate you!
What's going on in your lives this Monday?

Manners, if you please! Salon Etiquette 101.

My career as a salon receptionist is going on three years now.

I'm practically a seasoned veteran of the hair industry.
Sorry. I couldn't resist.
Okay, not really. But anyways.

During this time, I've learned quite a bit about approproiate salon etiquette.

Curious? I will now bestow this acquired wisdom upon you.

1. Do not be late to your appointment. Seriously. Not even five to ten minutes. It totally messes up your stylist's schedule and will probably make her late for her other appointments. Services are blocked out very precisely and even a five minute variation can really knock things out of sync.

2. If you are going to be late, call the salon and let them know.

3. When calling the salon to inform them that you will be late, do not lie about your expected arrival time. Do not say you will be there in ten minutes when you're in fact lying in bed and a good thirty minutes away from making it to the salon. Not good.

4. Book your appointments in advance, especially if you have a special occasion that you're planning on having your hair styled for. Calling on a Saturday afternoon and expecting to get in for a color and cut before the day's end is rarely successful. You have a better chance of running into Prince William at your local Starbuck's or being cast in the next episode of Glee.

5. If you do decide to try to get in last minute, just be aware that it will be tough to get in with your preferred stylist and try not be too sassy with the front desk person if she says the salon is completely booked. We cannot help the fact that all of the day's appointments have been taken, and we are not plotting against you and the beauty of your hair. Really. It isn't personal.

6. When calling to make an appointment, make the appointment through the front desk person. That's our job! Do not ask for your stylist to get on the phone in order to make an appointment. That is not her job. She is not going to reveal any secret appointments. I promise we front desk people are not hiding appointment times from you! Your stylist will just listen politely and then ask the receptionist to make the actual appointment. Unnecessary steps, you know?

7. If you call a salon and get the answering machine, leave a message. Do not hang up and call on repeat. The recepionist is either on all available lines or dealing with a matter that makes her or him unable to answer the phone. Calling excessively will not get you connected to the front desk person any sooner. Just leave a message, and he or she will call you back as soon as possible.

8. When checking out at the front desk, do not take or make a phone call unless it's an urgent matter. The front desk person will feel awkward standing there and staring at you as you chat away to your best friend about where you plan on having dinner that night. I just want you to pay for your services and maybe make a followup appointment. I'll work quickly so you can call your best friend ASAP.

9. Also while checking out, if there are one or more clients waiting behind you, it is polite to refrain from scheduling the remainder of your year's appointments. Make the next one and call back later for the others, or simply step out of line until the other clients have checked out before making the next twelve months' worth of appointments. Common courtesy.

10. When you call the salon, remember that it is often extremely loud on the receptionist's end. There are multiple hair dryers going and dozens of women talking. It's hard to hear so speak up and don't be offended if the front desk person asks you to repeat yourself. She's listening to you- I promise! It's just difficult to hear most of the time.

11. Do not be late to your appointment. Did I already mention that one? Why, yes! I did. It's just that important.

Am I the only one...?

Am I the only one...

...who doesn't like yogurt?
No thank you!

...who thinks sweatpants with "PINK" spread across one's butt are tacky?

I really don't wish to read words across your butt.

...who feels like her BlackBerry is a dinosaur in this iPhone world?

Poor, ancient Blackberry.
...who wears leggings every single day of her life?

Ah yes, here I am with my Starbuck's. Looking unapologetically glam.
...who just cannot understand what is so cute about a pair of Sperrys?

These looks shockingly similar to my father's footwear.
 ...who loves to do laundry?

What my campus laundry room looks like! Obviously!
...who hates running and would rather just walk?
I'll just walk through this gorgeous autumn forrest, thanks!

...whose heart melts whenever she reads Keats?
Lovely, lovely John Keats.

...who relates entirely too much to Becky Bloomwood?

Me???
...who likes the fact that neither of her parents have a Facebook account?

Stay away, Mom and Dad!
So! What are your little quirks? What makes you unique?

Happy birthday little blog!

Just seconds ago, I was creeping on my blog since I thought its first birthday must be quickly approaching.

Then, I realized that my blog's first birthday is today.
via
Awkward.

What kind of mother forgets her own blog's birthday?

Negligent parenting.

I cannot believe I've already been writing this blog for an entire year now! It's so weird looking back on old posts.

Did I really write SUCH long posts rambling on about topics like the hosts of the Oscars or what I cooked for lunch that day? Yes. I did. And they were overly lengthy and boring.

Not that I am ever overly lengthy and boring now.

Anyway.

I have fallen in love with blogging and all of you fellow bloggers out there. I honestly cannot imagine my life without Leggings Love and all of my Blogger friends. It has been absolutely amazing getting to connect with women all of the country and world through blogging. What's even more incredible is that some of you feel like friends I've known for years!

That sounds overly dramatic, and I love it.

My blog has provided me with an amazing place to write everyday, a place where I don't have to be formal and can just write for fun. It's also become somewhat of a public journal for me.

Happy first birthday, Leggings Love! <3

Does this give me permission to have cupcakes and champagne now?

"I like my money where I can see it, hanging in my closet."

Much agreed, Carrie Bradshaw!

And on Monday, I found some fantastic items in Modcloth's Cabin Fever Sale to add to my own lovely closet.

Item number one: Lesson in Classics Coat
via
I LOVE this trench! I've had my eye on it for a while now, and I couldn't believe my luck when I saw it marked down to $21.99! This is going to make such a great statement piece for the springtime.

Item number two: Lickety Split Dress
via
I have a lot of weddings coming up this year, and I figure I can wear this dress to at least one of them. I like how simple this dress is but how it also has a certain edge with its asymmetrical design.

Item number three: Pearls of Wisdom Necklace
via
I've been in need of a pearl necklace for a while now, and this one really caught my eye. Classic but fun!

If you haven't perused Modcloth's sale yet, you should probably get over there right now. Go.

Getting back on track

Finally, finally I have been able to get back on track with my weight loss routine.

I had been avoiding the scale for months (!), and when I had to face it at my doctor's appointment last Tuesday, I was unsurprised to see that I had gained back seven pounds.
Here I am being lazy as I merely stand and drink tea as my friend runs a 10K.
The sad thing is, I was actually relieved it wasn't more.

Seeing the number though made me kick it back into high gear!

Yes. I'm aware of how lame that sounded.

I've gone back to what worked for me at the height of my weight loss: counting calories.

I don't particularly enjoy counting calories, but it's what really works for me. I wish I could be the kind of person who is able to simply eat healthy food in small portions, but that is SO not me. Maybe someday it will be, but for now I need to stick to the nutrition labels and my little notebook full of calculations.

I am already down two pounds from last Tuesday so I am feeling motivated and ready to go!

But it's so scary!

I've always been a planner.

Especially when it comes to, you know, my future (very large emphasis on the importance and magnitude of the word "future" if the italics didn't convey those sentiments already)

I will be done with my undergraduate career in about eight weeks.

Eight weeks!!!

And I have no idea what I'm going to do with my life.

What if the graduate schools I am applying to don't accept me? What will I do after graduate school? Where will I be living? What will I be doing?

Freaking out here, bloggers.

I love being an English major. It was the perfect fit for me, and my coursework truly makes me feel happy.

But as an English major, I have no clear career path. It sometimes makes me envious of friends majoring in fields like education, accounting, or nursing.

I could end up anywhere, which is exciting but also very scary.

Eeeesh.

I guess at the end of the day, I should just be thankful that I do not like this THIS anymore.

Seriously. That is SO cringey I can hardly stand it. Meet eighteen-year-old Jenna on her first day of college! Sporting her high school tennis sweatshirt and a hideous handbag.

Yes. That is real.

When one cupcake just isn't enough...

Last night, my best friend came over for a cozy night in.

He brought over Indian food, all of the supplies needed to make cupcakes, and The Help.

The DVD that is. We did not sit around and read aloud to one another.

We feasted upon chicken mushroom, chicken korma, and naan, and then we got to work in the kitchen.

He had even bought Disney Princess sprinkles for our cupcake creations. Insanely adorable.

We ate our cupcakes while watching The Help followed by Something Borrowed, and I consumed an embarrassing amount of them.
Why are you so delicious? And cute?
To make matters worse, I've eaten about five more cupcakes today.

I even painted my nails in hopes that my drying polish would keep my hands out of the cupcakes for a bit.

I love this color. It's so glitzy and goes with every color I wear. Lovely, lovely.

Unfortunately, my nails are dry now, and I can access the cupcakes once again.

Sigh.

Take a deep breath now!

Sometimes, when you are experiencing a total nervy-b over quantitative analysis and its soul-crushing homework assignments, you just have to make yourself a cup of hot chocolate.

And drink it out of a penguin mug.

And spend fifteen minutes browsing Modcloth.

And pray to St. Jude (the patron saint of hopeless causes) that you will survive this course without a GPA-ruining grade.

Is it Friday yet?

A Week of Flats

Recently, I was looking for a pair of shoes to wear when I realized that I didn't have as many pairs of flats as I had thought.

Oh, and 3/4 of my flats were purple. How strange.

I wear flats essentially every day of my life, and I tend to go through pairs rather quickly.

Once I had acknowledged that my flats selection was becoming sparse, I reverted into one of my bad habits. Over buying.

It's as though once I know I am running low on an item, I cannot simply go buy a normal amount of it. I have to go overboard.

This past week, I bought three new pairs of flats.

Beautiful, aren't they?

And not a single pair is purple! Success!

Home Tour: My bedroom

I have always been a nosy person, especially when it comes to other people's home decor.

When I am driving at night, I just love looking into brightly lit windows and seeing how a house is decorated.

Creepy? Oh, yes.

I've decided to do a few different blog posts starring the different rooms in my campus house in hopes that my house-creeping-karma will be back on the positive side. Or something like that.

Really, I just like sharing things.

The room I will be showing you today is...my bedroom!
My bed and desk area. This is where I spend most of my time (meaning my bed, not my desk).
This is my favorite way to store/display pretty statement necklaces.

So much storage going on here from books to perfume!

My perfume tray (AKA plate bought from TJMaxx) and jewelry box

Some of my favorite books!

I LOVE this tall window and the wide window sill.

Jewelry tree I HAD to have from PBTeen when I was in high school and slightly obsessed with everything PBTeen. The other dish is actually a soap dish from Ikea that I was using as an ice cream bowl until a friend showed me how she used hers for extra jewelry storage. The dish feels much warmer in this new role.

More books!

Such a comfy bed. I only wish it wasn't a teeny twin!

My desk area (Note: more homework is accomplished while sitting in my bed)
And that is my bedroom! The closet and bathroom that are connected to my room deserve their own posts. They are just that fabulous. So stay tuned!

Happy Monday!

One of the weirdest things I've ever done

This past Friday, my friend and I stopped at Barnes & Noble. My mom and I were attending my cousin's baby shower that evening, and I was given the task of choosing the two children's books we would be bringing.

I knew exactly what two books my cousin's bebe needed.

Madeline and Eloise.
via
via
Nothing else would do!

After finding Madeline in London, my friend and I searched everywhere for the lovely Eloise. We eventually ventured over to customer service where we discovered that the store was all sold out of EVERY Eloise book!

Quelle dommage!

We began to make our way back to the children's section when another book caught my eye.

I couldn't believe it.

It was a counting book version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice!!!!!!!!

As in Pride and Prejudice for babies!
via
via
Okay, here is where the weird/creepy part of the story comes in.

I bought two copies of the book- one for the shower and one for my future offspring.

Yeah. Super awkward and strange.

Especially considering that 1) I am single, and 2) I probably will not be bearing children for another ten years.

Just another normal day in the life of Jane Austen addict.
